What This Course Is About

Overview

Finding information has never been easier; judging it has never been harder. Sources contradict each other, confident nonsense travels fast, and bias and logical fallacies slip past unnoticed. We all know the consequences of unchecked, undisciplined thinking — decisions made on evidence that would not survive a second look.

Five courses in this series build the tools to do better. They cover what disciplined thinkers actually do and the three levels of thinking; how to recognise fallacies, the incorrect conclusions drawn from incorrect reasoning, and move sloppy thinking towards elegant thinking; the two parts of an argument and how to pinpoint a claim, identify evidence and test it; why a checklist helps most in complex situations; and the four steps to optimal understanding, where explanation does the work that persuasion cannot.

Each course module averages 25 minutes to complete, with a post-assessment included for every course. Application Activity forms let participants apply the learning in their own scenario and environment. Delivery is video and text-style self-paced e-learning with self-reflection activities, and a Certificate of Completion is awarded at the end.

1 Introduction — Take control of your own thoughts to see whether they hold up, and apply self-corrective thinking to reach the highest level of rational reasoning and fair-mindedness. Learn what disciplined thinkers do, the three levels of thinking, and how to work against personal bias.
2 Managing Deception and Fallacies — Fallacies are incorrect conclusions drawn from incorrect reasoning — and those who deceive often believe what they are saying. Identify the traits of sloppy thinking and its impact, with guidelines for moving from sloppy thinking to elegant thinking.
3 Persuasive Arguments — Make better sense of what you read and hear, and become more persuasive yourself. Understand the two parts of an argument and how evidence supports a claim, then evaluate an argument by pinpointing the claim, identifying and testing the evidence, and identifying conclusions.
4 Checklists for Rational Decisions — Rational decisions rest on reasonable, intelligent thinking. See how rational thinking improves the quality of your decisions, why a checklist helps most in complex situations, and apply a set of steps for reaching sound conclusions.
5 Optimal Understanding and Explanations — Arguments persuade and contain a claim and a conclusion; explanations increase understanding by finding the best-reasoned answer through a learning process. Work through the four steps to optimal understanding, use questioning to deepen it, and discover the power of reflection.
