What This Course Is About

Overview

Most people know an ethical problem when it is obvious. The harder cases are the ones that arrive quietly — a conflict of interest, a use of company resources that nobody questions, a customer confidence issue that would be easier to ignore. Recognising those moments, and having a method for working through them, is what this series teaches.

It moves from the foundations — what ethics is and the causes of unethical behaviour — through employee rights and responsibilities, a structured approach to ethical decision-making that takes the emotion out of a difficult situation, the four common ethical business problems and how to handle them, and finally what it takes to lead ethical conduct in others.

Each course module averages 25 minutes to complete and includes a post-assessment. Application Activity forms let participants apply the learning to their own scenario and environment. The format is video and text-style self-paced e-learning with self-reflection activities throughout.

  • 1 Introduction to Ethics — what ethics is and how it answers questions about how people should behave, how to identify a potential ethical dilemma, and the three causes of unethical behaviour and how to handle them.
  • 2 Employee Ethical Responsibilities — the difference between employees' rights and their responsibilities, what falls inside your circle of ethical influence, and the various types of ethical responsibility and why each matters.
  • 3 Ethical Dilemma Decision-Making — how to base duty-principled decisions on natural laws such as the right to life, health and safety, and how to take the emotion out of a situation by clarifying the facts, stakeholders, consequences, duties and character before deciding.
  • 4 Ethical Problem-Solving — the four common ethical business problems — HR issues, conflicts of interest, improper use of company resources and customer confidence issues — plus the four stages of ethical problem solving and how to avoid moral disasters.
  • 5 Leading Ethical Conduct — the six common excuses for unethical behaviour and the three most pervasive ethical misconducts, with guidelines for managing conduct: show empathy, get the truth, be sensible, and focus on responsibility, respect and results.
