Problem Solving
Suboptimal decisions, wasted resources and missed opportunities usually trace back to the same thing: problems handled badly. This series equips participants with the essential skills to handle them well.

Overview
Individuals and organisations run into the same difficulty. A problem is spotted late, defined loosely, and treated at the symptom rather than the root — and the cost shows up as poor decisions, wasted resources and opportunities that quietly pass by.
Five courses in this series work the whole cycle. Recognise a problem early, as the gap between where you are and where you want to be, using gap analysis, surveys and interviews. Apply the four stages, and tell a problem from a dilemma. Define accurately — target boundary, description, measure of success — with data collection, symptom analysis, brainstorming, key-word analysis, force-field analysis and a written conflict definition. Categorise decisions and take the four steps to decision making, anticipating implementation by asking what, who, when, where and how. And when a situation turns urgent, apply the six steps that end it rather than merely control it.
Each course module averages 25 minutes to complete, with a post-assessment included for every course. Application Activity forms let participants apply the learning in their own scenario and environment. Delivery is video and text-style self-paced e-learning with self-reflection activities, and a Certificate of Completion is awarded at the end.
What You’ll Learn
- 1 Early Problem Recognition — Recognition begins when you notice the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Look proactively for hidden problems using gap analysis, surveys and interviews, learn to unpack the whole of a problem rather than one visible corner, and gather the data to prove it.
- 2 The Four Stages — Work through the four stages of creative resolution and the characteristics to weigh at each one. Tell a problem from a dilemma, and verify that a problem really has been resolved through evaluation and questioning.
- 3 Defining and Analysing Problems Accurately — A good definition sets a target boundary, a description and a measure of success. Define accurately using data collection, symptom analysis, brainstorming, key-word analysis, force-field analysis, writing it down and writing a conflict definition — then treat the root cause, and understand the difference between being at cause and at affect.
- 4 Confident Decision-Making — Categorise decisions so you can make them more effectively, take a measured approach through the four steps to decision making, anticipate implementation by asking what, who, when, where and how, and monitor it through observation of key success indicators.
- 5 Crisis Resolution — A crisis is an urgent demand for change that must be addressed immediately, and its main cause is often people-related. Management merely controls the situation; resolution ends it. Prevent, manage and eliminate negative impact with the six steps — and make sure you learn from it afterwards.
