Q-PATH by MedLabTech Academy
Strengthen your workforce. Sustain good practice.
Bring your teams together around what matters most: the patient.
Q-PATH helps healthcare institutions enhance workforce performance through coordinated professional development, practical application and a shared patient-centred approach. Across a 12-month institutional cycle, employees from different departments progress through connected development stations relevant to their responsibilities.
Build on your workforce’s strengths. Reinforce respectful communication, reliable practices and leadership that supports quality every day.
Support the people who make quality possible
Your institution invests in qualified people, established procedures and reliable systems. Q-PATH supports that investment by helping employees understand how their everyday actions connect with the work of other departments—and with the patient’s experience.
Whether your priority is strengthening a particular area or sustaining an already high standard, Q-PATH provides a continuing structure for workforce development.
Workforce capabilities Q-PATH helps develop
- Clear, respectful communication with patients and colleagues.
- Better understanding and coordination across departments.
- Consistent practices along the patient and specimen journey.
- Quality-focused laboratory management.
- Leadership that reinforces good practice and follows through on improvement.
Structured education provides the foundation. Your institution guides workplace application and decides how to review progress.
Why the laboratory pathway connects the whole institution
A reliable laboratory result depends on coordinated work before, during and after testing.
Reception, clinical teams, specimen collectors, couriers, laboratory personnel and leaders each contribute to that pathway. Q-PATH uses these connections to make workforce development practical and relevant across departments.
Roles that contribute to the laboratory pathway
- Reception
- Clinical teams
- Specimen collectors
- Couriers
- Laboratory personnel
- Leaders
The laboratory provides the operational focus.
The patient remains at the centre.
The Q-PATH development pathway
Seven connected stations. A shared patient-centred purpose.
Q-PATH brings seven workforce-development stations into one coordinated pathway. Each station strengthens practices that help employees work effectively within their roles and understand how their contribution connects with colleagues and the patient’s experience.
Employees follow the stations relevant to their responsibilities through institution-approved role mapping. Participation is planned around the work people do, rather than department membership alone.

A shared foundation, with learning matched to responsibilities
Shared foundation
Stations 1–4 form the shared foundation, subject to institution-approved role mapping. They support respectful service, coordinated care, accurate communication and supportive teamwork.
Specimen pathway responsibilities
Station 5 applies to employees whose responsibilities affect the specimen pathway, including relevant clinical, collection, transport and laboratory roles.
Quality and leadership responsibilities
Stations 6–7 serve relevant laboratory, quality, supervisory and leadership responsibilities. The institution agrees participation according to each employee’s role.
One connected pathway, with participation matched to the contribution each person makes.
The Q-PATH institutional cycle
How Q-PATH works in your institution
Q-PATH brings employees together through a coordinated 12-month institutional cycle. Learning is matched to responsibilities, groups enter progressively, and the Academy supports delivery while your institution guides workplace application.
-
1
Step 1: Prepare together
Agree your participating employees, assigned learning, institutional coordinator and cohort schedule. Plan realistic study arrangements around staffing and course requirements.
-
2
Step 2: Launch progressively
Introduce multidisciplinary cohorts in stages. Employees access their assigned learning through individual accounts, with enrolment and access arrangements confirmed before launch.
-
3
Step 3: Support participation
The Academy provides learner support, educational progress reports and follow-up. Your institution connects learning with everyday practice through existing policies and departmental responsibilities.
-
4
Step 4: Review and continue
Review progress at the end of the institutional cycle, recognise completed learning and agree next steps. Outstanding learning and any access extensions are addressed through the agreed arrangements.
The institutional cycle begins when the first cohort enters. It does not give every employee 12 months of access; individual schedules and access periods are agreed separately.
Learn in groups that connect different roles
Q-PATH typically brings participants into approximately four multidisciplinary cohorts. Group sizes and entry intervals are agreed with the institution, taking account of staffing, assigned learning and support capacity.
Bringing different roles together helps employees understand how their work affects colleagues and the patient journey. Employees complete the stations assigned to their responsibilities.
Optional conversations, practical connections
The Academy supplies a short Optional Team Conversation Guide for each station. These guides help colleagues recognise good practice, understand how their roles connect and suggest something to strengthen together.
- ?What already works well?
- ?How does our work connect?
- ?What could we strengthen together?
The institution decides whether and how conversations take place. A willing Cohort Captain may facilitate. Participation is voluntary and does not affect course certification or employee appraisal.
Teams may use their institution’s approved communication system or an agreed Academy-hosted Q-PATH Cohort Space. Membership, access and privacy arrangements are confirmed before use. Discussion uses fictional examples and general practice themes, without patient information or confidential institutional records.

Recognise the learning each employee completes
Station certificates
A MedLabTech Academy certificate recognises each successfully completed station. CPD credits apply where the supporting course has current approval.
A consolidated learning record
An Academy-maintained record can show assigned stations, completed learning, completion dates, certificates and applicable CPD credits.
Pathway completion
Employees who successfully complete all stations assigned within their institution-approved role pathway may receive a Q-PATH Pathway Completion Certificate identifying the learning completed.
Certificates recognise educational completion. They do not replace workplace competency assessment, professional licensing or authorization to perform clinical procedures.
Progress and institutional ownership
Understand progress at two distinct levels
Q-PATH separates employee learning achievement from institutional performance. Learning records show educational progress. Your institution’s own measures help it examine practices and service performance over time.
Employee learning progress
Educational reports show assigned learning, course progress, assessment results and completion. Authorized institutional users can use these records to follow participation and identify where learning support is needed.
Managed through the Academy’s learning platform.
Institutional performance
Your institution may review a small set of relevant measures, such as patient communication, specimen reliability, timely reporting or improvement-action follow-through. Departments validate their data and the institution interprets the findings.
Managed and retained within your institution.
Course completion does not establish workplace competency or prove that service performance has improved. Institutional results are considered alongside staffing, workload and other relevant changes.
Build on your existing measures, or use guided tools
Institutional measurement is optional. If your institution chooses to use it, Q-PATH provides a companion guide with instructions, collection forms and worked examples. Your institution approves the measures and selects the appropriate route.
OPTION A
Use existing institutional data
Build on your approved surveys, quality records and existing measures. Review the first six months, then compare them with a comparable period covering months 7–12.
A comparable pre-entry result may also be included when available. Without one, the first six months serve as the initial comparison reference.
Months 1–6
Months 7–12
Two comparable six-month periods.
OPTION B
Use Q-PATH measurement tools
Use the supplied definitions, collection forms and examples to establish an initial reference and review progress during three selected collection windows.
- Months 1–3Initial baseline
- Months 5–7Progress review
- Months 10–12Cycle-end review
Three selected collection windows, with review after each window closes.
Dates are counted from the first cohort’s entry. The Option B initial baseline is collected during implementation; it does not represent performance before Q-PATH.
Use consistent definitions and comparable collection methods. Missing information is recorded as unavailable, not zero. Changes in results help guide institutional review, but do not establish that Q-PATH alone caused the change.
Your institution owns its data and decisions
The Academy supplies educational support, measurement tools and collection guidance. Your institution retains its operational records and leads validation, interpretation and improvement decisions.
Institution-controlled records
Patient, operational, competency, incident and employment records remain under institutional control. Patient-identifiable information must not be shared with the Academy or entered into its learning platform.
Departmental expertise
The Q-PATH Coordinator organises the process. Relevant departments, quality teams and patient-experience teams supply and validate their own information. Coordination does not transfer their professional authority.
Voluntary sharing
The Academy does not routinely monitor or interpret institutional outcomes or require operational datasets. Any sharing of aggregate, non-identifiable results is voluntary and subject to agreed permissions.
Begin with a plan for your institution
The first step is a planning conversation to understand your services, workforce and priorities. Together, we define a practical scope before enrolment begins.
- 01
Step 1: Define the scope
Identify the participating services and staff groups, and name the institutional sponsor and Q-PATH Coordinator.
- 02
Step 2: Match learning to responsibilities
Agree the role-to-station map, participant numbers, cohort entry and realistic study arrangements.
- 03
Step 3: Agree support and review
Confirm learner support, optional team conversations and whether the institution wishes to use either measurement route.
- 04
Step 4: Confirm and launch
Agree access periods, completion arrangements, responsibilities, fees and data permissions before launching the first cohort.
Q-PATH supports your existing HR, education and quality systems. Workplace competency, clinical authorization and accreditation remain the responsibility of the institution and the relevant authorities.
A coordinated approach to developing your people, with the patient at the centre.
