First, individuals entering healthcare with no prior experience: ER registration clerks, medical office assistants, healthcare assistants, new graduates, and career changers. Second, healthcare professionals broadening their scope of practice: internationally educated healthcare professionals, nurses (RN, RPN), medical laboratory technologists and technicians, students in MLT and MLA programs, and emergency medical technicians. The flexible online theory combined with one in-person practical day makes the program realistic for people who are working while they study.

Three reasons. First, the blended format: two self-paced online semesters with multimedia lectures, interactive modules, and step-by-step skills videos, so you study on your own schedule. Second, supervised practical depth: a 6-hour hands-on session under the supervision of a CPTG Certified Phlebotomy Instructor, using professional venipuncture training equipment. Third, support that continues after graduation: a structured pathway to the CPT certification exam and a complimentary 3-hour refresher session for every graduate. Employers value candidates whose training includes supervised hands-on practice, and this certification demonstrates your commitment to professional standards in phlebotomy.

Semester 1 covers fundamental topics such as anatomy, infection control, introduction to venipuncture techniques, patient communication, and safety protocols.

Semester 2 provides advanced training and knowledge of phlebotomy. The main subjects are: blood collection procedures using vacuum tubes, butterfly needles, and syringes; specialized blood collection techniques, advanced vein assessment, and pediatric phlebotomy; specimen handling and venipuncture complications; skin puncture, POCT, and arterial puncture; and quality assurance and professional practice.

The hands-on session is scheduled after you pass the final term exam, so you will practice what you learned in the two online semesters. Your instructor will introduce you to the safety features before you practice the phlebotomy procedure using a simulation arm kit. You will also be introduced to the types of tubes, needles, and all other tools used in venipuncture.

The online theory portion typically takes 28 to 32 hours across the two semesters, and the hands-on training is six hours. If you study about four hours per week, you can finish the theory in roughly two months. Once you pass the final term exam, book your hands-on session from the upcoming dates before your course access ends; the session itself may take place after your access period, and your booking remains valid.

Each section ends with a self-checkpoint, and there are four self-checkpoints in each semester. You need a grade of 80% or higher to pass each self-checkpoint. A midterm exam and a final term exam come at the end of each semester.

Yes. In addition to the skills videos demonstrating the phlebotomy procedure step by step, along with skin and arterial puncture, the course ends with six hours of in-person hands-on training.

You earn two documents from MedLabTech Academy. When you pass the final term exam, you receive your theory exam certificate, which carries your 28 CPD credits and CPD Registration No. 1018700. When you complete the in-person hands-on session, you receive your Certificate of Completion and an official letter from the academy. Together, these are the documents required to apply for CPTG membership and challenge the CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) certification exam. The CPT credential itself is issued by CPTG after you pass their exam, not by MedLabTech Academy.

The curriculum covers every knowledge domain of professional phlebotomy practice, and the 349 practice questions train you to handle any difficulty level you will meet in the CPT exam. The 6-hour hands-on session builds the practical competence and confidence the credential represents. Graduates receive the completion documents required by CPTG to register for the exam, and every graduate is entitled to a complimentary refresher session before the practical portion of the exam.

In Canada, phlebotomy is not a provincially licensed profession, and employers set their own hiring requirements. Most Ontario employers look for completion of a recognized training program with supervised hands-on experience, which this course provides, and many prefer or require the CPT credential, which this course prepares you to challenge. If you plan to work outside Ontario or outside Canada, check the local employer and regulatory requirements for your destination.

Yes. Every graduate is entitled to one complimentary 3-hour hands-on refresher session within 12 months of certification. It is ideal before a job interview or ahead of the practical portion of the CPT certification exam. Attendance is subject to spot availability, and the academy reserves the right to decline a request if the session is full.

The hands-on session within this course cannot be booked or purchased separately; it is reserved for enrolled students who have passed the final exam.
